Dating Tips: 5 Easy Ways to Make Men Smile

paa196000022

It’s not a complicated process to keep a man happy. Here, you’ll learn simple (and free) gestures to show that you care.

By dating blogger Ryan Dodge for Glamour

Updated: May 7, 2009

As someone who can barely calculate a tip, I don’t have much to add to the conversation about our tanking economy. But I would like to share one little piece of wisdom I picked up from my favorite social economists: you can’t buy me love. Corny but true. Don’t believe me? Try one of my five patented Romance Enhancers — if you don’t think they’re more effective than a gift card, I’ll send you a full refund.

#1: Touch His Arm

There are a lot of ways to subtly let a guy know you’re into him, like maintaining eye contact, playing with your hair, and smiling a lot. But the only one that sends shivers down my spine is when a girl touches my arm during conversation. It always surprises me, and it’s always great.

#2: Send Him a Random Text Message in Midday.

OK, this might not be free depending on your cell phone plan, but it’s still a great value. Nothing breaks the monotony of a long workday like a flirty note from someone special, and unless his job is super-intense he’ll have plenty of time to daydream about you.

#3: Ask Him a Question About Something He Knows a Lot About

Dating news flash: Guys like to show off for you. So if your dude could use an ego boost, there’s nothing like letting him feel like an expert. Ask him about fishing, the 1983 Chicago White Sox, or the mating habits of the Guyanese Bullfinches — whatever he’s into. Just remember to nod frequently and look really interested.

#4: Give Him a Very Specific Compliment

Telling a guy he’s funny, handsome, or smart is always appreciated, but the really

meaningful compliments are the ones that reveal how well you know him. Something like “I love the way your face scrunches up when you’re doing the crossword puzzle” or “You have the most manly calves I’ve ever seen.”

#5: Send Him the Diary Entry You Wrote After Your First Date — or Write One Now

One of the best things about having a girlfriend is reminiscing about what you thought about each other in the beginning of your relationship. Reliving all of the uncertainty and anxiety is strangely exhilarating. I can’t think of a better anniversary present than a sanctioned peek into the documented thoughts of someone I care about.

Bonus Tip:

Give him a free pass to go out with his friends alone.

Is Oral Sex the New Kiss Good Night? Teens Say Yes; Parents Shocked

New Documentary On Prevalence Of Teen Oral Sex Shocks Parents

Teens: Oral Sex and Casual Prostitution No Biggie

Teens in Documentary Say Oral Sex ‘Not That Big of a Deal’ and Get Paid for Sexual Favors

They don’t give their names, but viewers can see their faces plainly and what these teens are saying is shocking parents. (To view video please click here)

“I ended up having sex with more than one person that night and then in the morning I was trying to get morning-after pills,” one of the girls said. “I was, like, 14 at the time.”

It’s just one of dozens of stories from teenage girls in a new documentary by Canadian filmmaker Sharlene Azam that aims to shed light on the secret, extremely sexual lives of today’s teens.

After four years researching for the documentary, Azam told “Good Morning America” that oral sex is as common as kissing for teens and that casual prostitution — being paid at parties to strip, give sexual favors or have sex — is far more commonplace than once believed.

“If you talk to teens [about oral sex] they’ll tell you it’s not a big deal,” Azam said. “In fact, they don’t consider it sex. They don’t consider a lot of things sex.”

Evidence of this casual attitude may be seen in the fact that more than half of all teens 15 to 19 years old have engaged in oral sex, according to a comprehensive 2005 study by the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics.

‘Oral Sex Is the New Goodnight Kiss’

In the documentary, “Oral Sex Is the New Goodnight Kiss,” girls as young as 11 years old talk about having sex, going to sex parties and — in some extreme situations — crossing into prostitution by exchanging sexual favors for money, clothes or even homework and then still arriving home in time for dinner with the family.

“Five minutes and I got $100,” one girl said. “If I’m going to sleep with them, anyway, because they’re good-looking, might as well get paid for it, right?”

Another girl talked about being offered $20 to take off her shirt or $100 to do a striptease on a table at a party.

The girls are almost always from good homes, but their parents are completely unaware, Azam said.

“The prettiest girls from the most successful families [are the most at risk]. We’re not talking about marginalized girls,” she said. “[Parents] don’t want to know because they really don’t know what to do. I mean, you might be prepared to learn that, at age 12, your daughter has had sex, but what are you supposed to do when your daughter has traded her virginity for $1,000 or a new bag?”

The New Rules of Healthy Eating

4 simple steps to cook better, look better, and save the planet

By: Mark Bittman, Photographs by: Romulo Yanes

A few years ago, I found myself in a bit of a personal crisis. After spending nearly three decades as a food writer who eagerly devoured anything and everything, I had developed a burgeoning belly and a case of high cholesterol, and I was prediabetic. So with this gloomy prognosis hanging over my head, I did what any sane person would do: I started eating better. Just a few months later I’d lost 35 pounds, seen my cholesterollevels shrink by 60 points, and reduced my sugar levels to normal. I felt better, slept better, and lived better.

What was the secret? I started eating more plants and whole grains, and scaled back my intake of refined carbohydrates and other junk. I still ate meat, but I ate it less frequently and made sure that what I did enjoy was of the highest quality. In terms of environmental impact, this new approach turned me from a Hummer into a Prius. The best part: It tasted better than the way I ate before. Talk about a great way to cut your carbon footprint.

So I wrote a book, Food Matters, about what I’d discovered, and laid out the simple guidelines that can help you become a better eater in every sense of the word. The changes may not feel drastic — and that’s the point — but the results will be dramatic. Think about it: four simple adjustments that can help you lose weight, reduce your chances of many long-term diseases, feel healthier all around, and help stop global warming. Now that’s a change you can believe in.

Lesson 1: Eat Plants with Abandon
For breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, make plants the center of your diet. Only 20 percent of men eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. So if your regular meat-to-produce ratio is 70:30, flip it. Salads, slow-braised or flash-saut?ed vegetables, raw vegetables dipped in olive oil, whole fruits, smoothies — diversity is the key to upping your intake, and you really can’t go overboard. Here’s a perfect way to knock out a few servings, inspired by the classic mozzarella-and-tomato Caprese salad.

Layered Salad
3 large ripe tomatoes, cored; or 3 oranges (blood oranges are nice), peeled
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, and sliced; or 8 thick slices of watermelon (no bigger than the tomatoes), rinds and seeds removed
1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 medium avocado, pitted, peeled, and sliced; or 8 thin slices of fresh mozzarella or feta cheese
1/4 pound jicama, or daikon or other radishes, or Asian pear, or Granny Smith apple, peeled (if necessary) and grated or finely chopped
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp lemon juice, or rice or sherry vinegar
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil or cilantro (garnish)

1. Slice each tomato or orange crosswise into 4 thick slabs. Place a layer of them on plates and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top them with the cucumber or watermelon, and the onion. Put the avocado or cheese slices over everything, fanning them out to cover. Top with the jicama, radish, pear, or apple, and sprinkle again with salt and lots of pepper.

2. In a small bowl, use a fork to mix the olive oil and lemon juice or vinegar, and drizzle the dressing over the salad. Garnish with the chopped basil or cilantro, and serve. Makes 4 servings.

Layered Peach Salad This is a must when peaches are in season. Cut two peaches into thin slices and layer them into the salad after the avocado or cheese, and before the jicama/radish/pear/apple layer. Dress and garnish as above.

Lesson 2: Treat Meat Like a Garnish

No one — least of all me — is suggesting that you become a vegetarian, but meat doesn’t always need to be the star of your plate, either. Some of the finest culinary traditions — Chinese, Japanese, and Italian, for instance — treat meat as a garnish rather than a staple, using it to accent dishes instead of defining them. Adding a few ounces of bacon, chicken, or (as in this recipe) grilled steak to salads, pastas, or stir-fried vegetables makes for an amazing — and virtuous — weeknight meal.

Thai Beef Salad
8 oz skirt or flank steak, leftover or raw
6 cups torn salad greens or mixed greens
1 cup torn fresh herb leaves (mint, cilantro, Thai basil, or a combination)
1/4 cup minced red onion
1 medium cucumber, peeled if necessary, cut in half lengthwise, seeded, and diced
1 small fresh hot red chili pepper, minced
Juice of two limes
1 Tbsp sesame oil
1 Tbsp fish sauce (nam pla, available at Asian markets) or soy sauce
1/2 tsp sugar

1. If you’re starting with raw meat, light a gas or charcoal grill, or heat a broiler; the rack should be about 4 inches from the heat source. Grill or broil the beef until medium rare, 5 to 10 minutes total, turning once or twice, depending on the thickness.

2. Toss the lettuce with the herbs, onion, and cucumber. Combine the remaining ingredients with 1 tablespoon of water (the dressing will be thin) and use half of this mixture to toss the greens. Remove the greens to a platter, reserving the remaining dressing.

3. Slice the beef thinly, reserving its juice; combine the juice with the remaining dressing. Lay the slices of beef over the salad, drizzle the dressing over all, and serve. Makes 4 servings.

Birth Control for Men?

thepillGentlemen, are you ready to start taking “The Pill”?

The time is rapidly approaching where the contraception question will include more male involvement besides the folded condom in your back pocket. Science has been working on equal opportunity birth control for sometime now, but thanks to some research spearheaded by China (who clearly has birth control issues) the “Man Pill” is no longer science fiction.

How will it work?

The pill or injection contains desogestrel, a synthetic hormone that is the main component in the female pill, as well as the male hormone testosterone. This combination blocks the production of sperm while maintaining male characteristics and sex drive. As with the female contraceptive pill, it must be taken daily.

Testosterone can inhibit sperm production. A study sponsored by the National Institute for Family Planning in Beijing China tested the experimental drug in a 1,000 men. In men ages 20 – 45, the injection of testosterone was about 99% effective. It’s reversible within 4-6 months, meaning sperm production would go back to normal. The study also noted that the drug was not as effective on Caucasian men verses Chinese men.

Too much testosterone messes with your prostate, which raises Cancer concerns. And sorry guys,  you’re not going to get any kind of anabolic steroid effect because of the shot. Nothing has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and the study in China didn’t focus on safety concerns, but I can hear the new line already,

”Don’t worry baby, I’m on the shot”

Spice Up Your Sex Life with Some Bedroom Fruits & Other Eatables

By Amy Oino

chocolate-covered-woman-with-strawberry

We’ve all seen the movie scenes: a sweaty man, a scantily clad woman, breathing heavily, groping wildly, reaching for a jar of liquid honey. The man erotically pours it over his woman, and then very sensually licks it off. What they don’t show is the poor gal struggling to clean the sticky mess from her skin, hair and other tender areas after the act is over.

If you are in the mood for a tasty sexual treat, avoid the pastrami (à la George Costanza) and opt for the more sexy, yet practical, options like the following food fantasies you should openly bring to the bedroom.

Champagne

The sweet bubbles are a definite crowd-pleaser. Try pouring it over each other — not to the point of drenching your mattress, couch, office chair, etc. — and licking every drop off. If you are well-prepared, chill the champagne before your rendezvous so that when you hold the liquid in your mouth and tease her with your lips, she’ll feel the cool sensation. Women take note: Holding champagne in your mouth then taking your man’s member in your mouth could be disastrous! The bubbles in champagne might give great sensation elsewhere on the body, but you have to remember the head of the penis, particularly the area just below it, is extremely sensitive and exposing it directly to champagne can be quite painful.

Breath mints

This food fantasy, mint, creates a tingly, cooling sensation that is perfect for oral sex. Suck on a strong mint, and be sure to roll it around in your mouth, then dive right into oral sex. For extra-intense pleasure, you can actually use the mint to roll across the clitoris (or across your nether regions if you can handle the hot/cold sensation). Be aware that some mint is quite strong and can cause pain instead of pleasure. Tread lightly.

Chocolate sauce

Time to put a spin on an old classic: Chocolate sauce is always a food fantasy favorite, but it’s been done before. To change things up a bit, dip a paintbrush in chocolate sauce and draw a map on your body. Have your girl follow the path, hitting each of your hot spots as she journeys along. Add more chocolate to the areas you’d like her to focus on. In keeping with tradition, feel free to add in some whipped cream and a couple of cherries.

Juicy fruit

No, not the gum; please, no gum! Instead, grab a sweet, juicy orange, grapefruit, strawberry, peach or even a watermelon (in small pieces). Take a piece of fruit and gently rub it across her lips, neck and breasts. Licking the sweet juices is a treat for the libido and the taste buds. Making sure there is no sticky residue remaining is the best part — it will require harder sucking.

There are a few more food fantasies you’ll want to bring to the bedroom with your girl…

Hot and cold water

Switching back and forth between temperatures can really heat things up and is a great food fantasy addition to the bedroom. During oral sex, have your girl drink hot water and then give you a little mouth action. Then switch it up to ice cubes. You’ll love the sensation. Ice cubes around her nipples can also be an intense sensory experience for her.

Popsicles

This food fantasy is a great combination of fruit and ice: sweet, cold and delicious. Not that Popsicles should not be inserted anywhere — sugar in the Popsicles can cause bacteria to build up in women, leading to infections. Use them to trace over body parts or to make your tongue nice and cold for bodily exploration.

Veggies

Cucumbers and carrots can double as sex toys, but be careful. The veggies should be washed thoroughly to get rid of pesticides (which can cause severe irritation). You should also be aware that while very pleasurable if used appropriately, things could go terribly wrong. Pieces of veggies can break off after they have been inserted into the body. Searching for “leftovers” can be awkward, to say the least. The last thing you need is a trip to the ER to have said food fantasy items extracted.

food fantasy don’ts

  • Do not use spicy foods like chili peppers or cayenne. You could be in for a world of hurt.
  • Do not allow substances to get too close to the tip of your penis or inside your gal’s vaginal opening. Certain foods, especially those containing sugar, can cause bacteria buildup, leading to yeast infections and other irritations. Be sure to clean up properly.
  • Do not double dip. Use squeeze bottles, when available. Dipping your fingers in and out of chocolate sauce containers can be a tad unsanitary.
  • Do not use foods you are normally allergic to. It is just common sense.
  • Do not fall asleep with food on or inside you.

foodie fun

Food fantasies are all about experimentation. Food can really spice up your sex life, but proceed with caution. Don’t dive right into an eight-course meal. Begin with something simple and go from there. Soon you’ll be a man that can satisfy any woman’s appetite.

They all have Friends! 5 People Your Woman Keeps Close

women25

You’d be a fool to think that she doesnt have friends. But worry not readers we’ve found an Article that our friend at ASKMen  tells us which kind of friends she keeps close and we give you their values to you and her.

5 Friends Every Woman Keeps Close

1. The wild friend from university

On the surface, your girlfriend’s wild gal pal from university appears to have nothing but an up side. She knows the bouncers for every bar in the city, she enjoys making out with random women and she never wears underwear. What could possibly go wrong with that? In a word: Everything. When she finally manages to pry your girlfriend free, she’ll try to teach her that monogamy is just another dirty word and that commitment is a sign of weakness. The key to surviving the wild friend from university is to never let her out of your sight. She might not appreciate your scrutiny, but just think of all the chicks you’ll get to watch her swap spit with.

Value to her: This friend every woman has can help your gal recharge her batteries with a carefree night of table dancing and tequila shots.
Value to you: Your girlfriend will be grateful she’s in a stable relationship the morning after.

2. The best friend they secretly hate

As sure as the sun rises in the east, every woman has a best friend they secretly despise. On the surface, they get along famously and are seldom apart, but as soon as they’re in separate rooms, they can’t stop bitching about each other. Everything this “friend” does rubs your girlfriend the wrong way — from the way she parts her hair right down to her new jacket, which incidentally is either 1) So last year’s style; 2) More expensive than anything you’ll ever be able to afford for her; or 3) Exactly the same jacket your girlfriend bought last Tuesday. Of course, she’d never say any of this to her face. After all, they’re best friends.

Value to her: Women love to gossip, and the best friend she secretly hates provides her with the ideal target for all of her pent-up venom.
Value to you: Getting your girlfriend worked up about her so-called friend can momentarily distract her from your own shortcomings.

3. The desperately single friend

Also known as “the fat friend,” the desperately single friend has gone dateless for at least two presidential administrations. Although essentially a decent person, this friend’s self-fixated, woe-is-me attitude has the potential to bring even the most raucous of celebrations to a painfully grinding halt. The bad news is that you never want to appear overly happy in her presence — the good news is that her sour attitude ensures you never will.

We’ve got more to dish on friends every woman has, and why they can be valuable to you…

4. The guy friend

Whether he’s a former flame or flamboyantly flaming, among the five friends every woman has is a guy friend, and chances are their tight-knit bond predates your relationship by at least a decade. He’s there for her when you’re not, and if you don’t play your cards right, he’ll make you look like the most insensitive knuckledragger on the face of the planet.

Value to her: One part sociologist and two parts zoologist, the guy friend can offer your gal insight into your often baffling behavior.
Value to you: Don’t feel like taking an intensive 10-week ballroom dancing class? No problem! The guy friend will gladly step in as a surrogate male companion while you sit at home balancing Cheetos on your ever-expanding belly.

5.The best friend

There is no driving a wedge between your girlfriend and her best friend. Chances are they’ve known each other since childhood, and for all you know, they may even have a suicide pact. Your girlfriend’s best friend is her true soul mate and confidante. She sends her greeting cards “just because,” and she’s been there through every single romantic encounter and emotional breakup. She knows things about you that you don’t even know yourself, and she knows secrets about your girlfriend that your girlfriend wouldn’t even reveal to her psychiatrist. This is precisely the companionship Aristotle had in mind when he said: “Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.”

Value to her: The best friend is the single most important female friend every woman has, next to her mother. She’s there for her through thick and thin, and she helps her with all of her most important — and many of her most trivial — life decisions.
Value to you: Your girlfriend’s best friend can be an excellent companion who can offer you startling insights into the female psyche. She can also end your courtship in the blink of an eye. If you want your relationship to last, it pays to keep your girlfriend close and her best friend even closer — no, not that close.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the “corniest” of them all?

Contributed by Patricia Parkans, Staff Writer

After meeting a bunch of wonderful vegetarian women at my job through a coworker friend of mine, I realized it was time for me to hear it. Spill the beans and let me have it. What were your inspirations for changing your diet?

We all sat around and enjoyed our lunches while Lelah Cafuoco presented us with all the facts. Lelah started off like all the rest of us, raised on meat and unaware of what else was out there or really even going on. Lelah became interested in nutrition and health and decided to go back to college. She attended The Institute for Integrated Nutrition in New York and is now a Certified Holistic Nutrition Counselor and Health Practitioner.

Lelah and a few other women suggested I watch a documentary called “King Corn;” a documentary about two college friends from Boston named Ian Chesney and Curt Ellis, who decided to move to Iowa to find out more about the corn industry and its overflowing existence in the human body. They sent a letter to Chuck Pyatt, a local farmer in Greene, Iowa, to ask if they could grow on his land. What they found is that corn is everywhere and is easily traced in a hair sample. Corn filled products line the shelves of supermarkets, containing anything from high fructose corn syrup to corn sweeteners to corn starch to corn oil.

I’m not going to give the whole documentary away, but I found it rather interesting to hear that both animals and humans are pumped with corn. It doesn’t exactly sound like a well-balanced, healthy diet, does it? Products are, however, available that do not contain high fructose corn syrup, one of the most popular ingredients you will find out there on the market. Sadly enough, there is such an overabundance that it’s practically possible to completely avoid corn in our diet even if we scan each and every label in the supermarket.

Corn overflows in farms across the Midwest. They have so much that they don’t even know what to do with it. Yet the USDA specifies we should stick to the four basic food groups of milk, meat, fruit and vegetables, and grain. How about the four basic food groups of corn, corn, corn, and more corn? Or should I say the four food groups of high fructose corn syrup, corn sweeteners, corn starch, and corn oil? It sure doesn’t sound healthy to me. Whose bright idea was it to flood the world with corn?

A future wealth of greens in your body and your pocket

Contributed by Patricia Parkans, Staff Writer

571bde128a2c636e_eating-lunch

Ever take a look at how much meat costs nowadays? When I used to buy beef at the grocery store, it was about $10-15 a pop, as were salmon fillets and chicken breasts. Buying a can of vegetarian black bean soup is maybe $3, a package of tofu about the same, veggie burgers are in the same range, and whether you buy frozen or fresh vegetables, they can be as cheap as under a $1 to a few dollars per pound.

Meat supposedly accounts for 10% of the world’s spending. The Vegetarian Times says that, “Eating vegetables, grains and fruits in place of the 200 pounds of beef, chicken and fish each non-vegetarian eats annually would cut individual food bills by an average of $4,000 a year…. If all the grain currently fed to livestock were consumed directly by people, the number of people who could be fed would be nearly 800 million,” says David Pimentel, professor of ecology at Cornell University.” Holy smokes! What a waste.

The meat industry has already blossomed into Godzilla, so why do we continue to feed this cash monster? Without insult to our previous ancestors, I say that we need to step outside the bubble, the box, the square, whatever you want to call it. We need to think a little about what the intentions of the meat industry really are. They don’t care about the animals. Their industry is one solely based on greed. How could they feed animals a diet of grain when all they really want is grass? How could they pump them with drugs so they will get bigger, when they are actually really sick because they are not being fed properly? And how can they shove them into small little cages or pens without any concept of how cruel that is? After all is said and done, how can they dare sell that meat to people and their families? Where is the USDA in all this? I can see it now. They’re sitting back enjoying all the luxuries of their richly stable bank accounts, all the “meats of their labor.”

Specialty food stores like Trader Joe’s are known for their healthy selections and reasonable prices. They cater to a number of specific diets that are free of gluten, low in sodium, fat free, vegetarian, vegan, heart healthy, are quick meals, and kosher. Visit http://www.traderjoes.com/ for further information on products, locations, jobs, flyers, etc. I highly recommend it to any budget conscious aspiring vegetarian!

Vegetarian diets: healthy or restrictive?

ist2_4108347_girl_holding_plate_with_salad

Written by: Patricia Parkans, Staff Writer

Think about all the nutrients that vegetables and other plant based foods provide. Mom always said to eat your vegetables because they are good for you. I remember my sister being reprimanded for trying to hide her peas in her mash potatoes. As a kid, vegetables are the last thing you’re excited about, but Mom insisted they should be eaten. It’s funny that I sure don’t seem to remember Mom saying the same for meat.

Most vegetarians are known as ovo-lacto or lacto-ovo; vegetarians which abstain from meat and fish, but do not stray from eggs or dairy products. Iron deficiency is said to be the only risk from this type of diet, according to the Merck Manual of Medical Information. Vegetarians, who completely abstain from meat products, or vegans, are at risk of developing deficiencies of Vitamin B12, a vitamin most commonly found in meat. On the other hand, ovo-lacto vegetarians are said to “…live longer and develop fewer chronic disabling conditions than people who eat meat.” Also noted are the facts that vegetarians are probably healthier because of their tendencies to avoid tobacco and alcohol, not to mention, their tendencies towards regular physical activity and exercise.

According to the book “Dieting for Dummies” by Jane Kirby, vegetarians can get the amount of vitamins and nutrients they need for iron, zinc, calcium, and vitamin D from:

Iron Sources

  • Dry beans and peas, such as pinto beans, black-eyed peas, ad canned baked beans
  • Leafy greens of the cabbage family, such as broccoli, kale, turnip greens, and collard greens, lima beans and green peas.
  • Yeast-leavened whole wheat breads and rolls

Zinc Sources

  • Black-eyed peas
  • Miso (fermented soybean paste)
  • Tofu
  • Wheat germ and wheat bran
  • Whole grains

Calcium Sources

  • Leafy greens of the cabbage family, such as kale, mustard greens, and turnip tops; and bok choy (or pak choi)
  • Tofu, if processed with calcium sulfate
  • Tortillas made from lime-processed corn

Vitamin D

  • Fortified breakfast cereals and margarines
  • Sunlight – your body makes vitamin D after sunlight (or ultraviolet light) hits your skin

Taking away all the meat and adding in healthy meat substitutes can’t be all that bad. Considering the drug induced, grain fed population of plant eating animals that are out there being slaughtered and sold for human consumption, I’d say vegetarianism is the safer choice hands down. But, what do I know?

5 Things All Men MUST Know Women Want!

While there is no playbook for how to snag and keep a good woman, science has accumulated some helpful tips toward a successful romantic life designed to last well beyond Valentine’s Day.

1. Offer money, love and dependability

Gals want looks and smarts. While you men can’t control those two characteristics much, take heart: Money and character are also important to women. A study in December of more than 1,000 undergraduate students revealed women’s top mate characteristics were mutual attraction and love, dependable character, and emotional stability.

Quality time counts, too.

A survey of more than 5,000 U.S. couples published in the journal Social Forces in 2006 suggested women are happiest in their marriages when men show a high level of emotional engagement: expressing positive emotions; being attentive to their wives’ needs; and setting aside time for activities focused specifically on the relationship.

2. Practice saying “thank you”

When it comes to a committed relationship, spats about money and household chores top the list of sources for marital rancor. And research has shown women take on the lion’s share of laundry and such.

Listen up, guys: One simple way to keep a lady happy even while buried beneath chores is to say “thank you.”

Results from a study of both married couples and college students living with roommates revealed that people who felt appreciated by their partners had less resentment over lopsided house labor. Those who felt appreciated also showed higher satisfaction with their relationships compared with other study participants.

3. Don’t be jealous

The Brad Pitts of the world may be good for your relationship. Psychologists have found that after meeting an available, attractive guy, women are more likely to work to strengthen their current relationships. The study, published last year in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, ran lab-based experiments of more than 700 college men and women.

In one experiment, women either met a single guy who flirted with them or an unavailable man who ignored them. Women who met the single guy were about 18 percent more likely to say they’d forgive their significant others for lying about the reason for canceling a date or other irritating behavior.

In a similar situation, men who met a hot, single woman were about 12 percent less likely than other men to forgive partners’ annoying behavior.

4. Leave aggression on the field

Women may dig guys roughing it up in a hockey game or other athletic competition. But when it comes to long-term romance, ladies would rather if their mates left such power punches on the ice (or other field), according to a study published in the December 2008 issue of the journal Personal Relationships.

Jeffrey Snyder, a doctoral candidate and evolutionary anthropologist at UCLA, and his colleagues found that women preferred men who relied on prestige, or certain skills and accomplishments, to get to the top, as opposed to men who used subtle aggressive behaviors to reach a powerful position – say, in a fraternity.

But don’t women go for “bad guys?” Not when it comes to long-term relationships. If that aggressive man isn’t flexible in his behavior, the result could be a domineering bully for a partner.

“If you have one individual that every time they disagree they get coercive and insist that their perspective is best, that their decision is final, and they’re going to get their way, that compromises the ability of individuals in a relationship to coordinate,” Snyder told LiveScience. “Basically what I’m talking about is inviting a jerk into your household.”

Love Don’t Cost a Thing: 20 Ways to Woo your Woman in a Recession

by Lu Lu the Great

heart

Strapped for cash? These romantic gestures are quick & easy ways to show love to that special lady in your life. It is often the small things that mean the most when it comes to expressing our feelings. Here are a few old-fashioned romantic gestures guaranteed to win her over–without breaking your budget. As always, the key lies in acting creative and thoughtful. So don’t wait too long! Try one of these romantic moves over the weekend and see what your special lady thinks…

1) Hold hands. Nothing makes a women feel more secure than her man holding her hand.

2) Take a walk together. Enjoy a nice day outside without the stress of driving!

3) Cook a special meal for her, even if you can’t cook. There’s nothing sexier than when a man tries to do something for his significant other even when he knows it may not turn out… perfect. Trust us, she will appreciate the effort!

4) Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier than usual. Why? To snuggle in the morning! Come on, you normally get up and stay in bed those extra minutes, anyway.  So turn over and snuggle!

5) Sleep naked together. There is nothing more relaxing, soothing and sexy than body-on -body warmth. And it saves on heat!

6) Mail a card to her home or office. Inside, write down the top 10 things you love about her. It will catch her off guard and make her blush.

7) Express yourself with words of appreciation for all the great things she does for you. A simple “Thank you, babe” goes a long way.

8.) Go out of your way to be romantic. That is romantic in itself. It makes a woman feel more appreciated.

9) A simple little escape- send her an email, text her, or tell her…”Let me help you escape your problems; give me 5 ways I can make this weekend relaxing….. There is only one rule, absolutely no worrying or stressing and lots of kisses and hugs!” and spend the weekend doing just that.

10) Make her breakfast in bed. Even if it’s just on the weekends after a busy week with work. Especially if she is making dinner for you every night of the week, this will put a big smile on her face. Food helps you reconnect on the mental level… so you have the energy to reconnect physically.

11) In the summertime, nothing compares to a trip to the beach–after hours. Avoid the 9 a.m. traffic, get there after dinner time (6-7pm) and enjoy a late dinner as the sun sets. When other beachgoers head home, find a nice spot by the water away from everyone and enjoy your own private beach.

12) Surprise her with a photo album filled with pictures of both of you. Any picture of any occasion will put a smile on her face.

13) Invite her to take a bath… not a shower.  Don’t be afraid to top this off with bubbles, champagne, candles, and maybe even a lil’ Barry White! There is nothing more soothing than to sit in hot water doing absolutely nothing but enjoying each other’s company.

14) Be a good listener. Listen and pay attention to her, including her venting sessions, happy thoughts, and the hidden clues that most men never find. Men, if you do this, you will understand that women don’t really need us to read their minds’–all the answers are right in front of you! Sometimes women talk about things that they might want, saw and liked, or just simply want to do–without having to ask.

15) Offer to help them with some chores! It frees up more time to spend together. Add some music and make it into a fun time. You will finish in half the time and have more time do other things not classified as “chores”…

16) Give an unrequested foot massage after a day in heels. Watch her squirm, enjoy, and then relax!

17) One word:  FOREPLAY. Literally… one word…

18) Write a love letter! Be romantic and have fun writing it. She will enjoy reading your thoughts on paper. If it’s good enough, she might even save the letter for years to come! And sure, it proves that you put in effort to reflect on your love for.

19) Turn an everyday dinner into spectacular occasion. Light, some candles… dim the lights… make it more intimate and special, then watch her swoon.

20) Make passionate love at least once a week! Its free isnt it?!

Burn fat with this multi-muscle challenge.

3 Moves to Rev Your Metabolism

By the Editors of Men’s Health

This workout from Craig Ballantyne, C.S.C.S., M.Sc., the owner of turbulencetraining.com, works your entire body in only three exercises. Complete the sequence, rest one minute, and repeat as many times as you can in 15 minutes.

1. Dumbbell Split Squat

Holding a pair of dumbbells with your arms hanging at your sides, stand in a staggered stance, your right foot in front of your left. Keeping your torso upright, lower your body until your front thigh is parallel to the floor. Raise yourself back up into the staggered stance and complete a total of eight repetitions. Switch legs and repeat.

2. Cross-Body Mountain Climber

Assume a pushup position, your body forming a straight line from your head to your heels. Brace your abs—you’ll hold them that way for the entire exercise. Now pull your left knee as close as you can to your right shoulder, without allowing your hips to sag. Return to the starting position and repeat, this time raising your right knee toward your left shoulder. That’s one rep. Complete a total of 10.

3. Chinup with Kneeup

Grab a chinup bar with an underhand grip (palms facing your body). Do a pullup so your chest reaches the bar, while also raising your knees to your chest. Then slowly lower your body and return to the start. If you can’t complete a chinup, simply raise your knees while hanging from the bar. Complete 10 reps, or as many as you can.

Beat it! New Study: Masturbation to be Good Fight Against Prostate Cancer

Masturbation can be good for the over-50s

Removal of toxins built up over a lifetime reduces the risk of prostate cancer

By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor

prostate_2vprostate_1m

Masturbation may be good for you – or bad, depending on your age. The solitary sexual activity that is widely practised but little discussed, is linked with an increased risk of prostate cancer when practised frequently by young men in their twenties and thirties, doctors say.

But by the time men reach their fifties, it may protect against the disease because it helps remove toxins that have built up over a lifetime.

Prostate cancer is known to be driven by the male hormone testosterone, and men with high levels of testosterone tend to have a higher sex drive and a higher risk of the cancer.

But most research has examined older men because prostate cancer is unusual under 50. Researchers at the University of Nottingham studied the link between sexual activity in younger men and the disease to see if it affected their long-term risk. More than 400 men with prostate cancer diagnosed before the age of 60 were questioned about their sexual habits over the preceding decades and the results compared with 400 controls.

The findings showed that those who had been most sexually active in their twenties – having sexual intercourse or masturbating more than 20 times a month – were more likely to have the cancer. Frequent masturbation, but not sexual intercourse, in the twenties and thirties was significantly linked with the later development of prostate cancer.

In their 50s men who were most sexually active (more than 10 times a month for sexual intercourse and masturbation combined) enjoyed a small protective effect. The effect was greater when masturbation was assessed on its own.

Polyxeni Dimitripolou, who led the study published in the British Journal of Urology International, said: “It seems as if keeping up a certain level of sexual activity through the decades is better than having a high level early [in the 20s and 30s] and then nothing.”

“One theory is that during the early years the prostate gland is more susceptible to hormonal changes and is still developing. As men age and accumulate toxins from the diet or through their lungs , sexual activity may help release them. Studies have found toxins in the semen and the fluid produced in the prostate. As you age it is more important to flush them out…

Tap Into Core Power

ab

By Mike Mejia, C.S.C.S., Men’s Health

Sure, crunches can carve abs. But a smart core-building program includes a variety of exercises. Swiss-ball finger taps offer real-world benefits beyond a six-pack, says the Men’s Health Muscle Guy, Mike Mejia, C.S.C.S.

The benefit

You’ll improve your abdominal strength, endurance, and flexibility. “This promotes core stability while your limbs are in motion, which is the way you use your body during most sports activities,” says Mejia.

How to do it

1. Lie on the floor, holding the ball between your lower legs.

2. Extend your arms straight up as you simultaneously raise your legs and upper body into a contracted position. Your lower back should remain on the floor, and your legs should be slightly bent. Keep your upper body in the “up” position for all of your repetitions as your legs move up and down.

3. At the top of the movement, tap the ball to your fingers. Aim for three sets of eight to 10 repetitions.

Expert tips

Keep your lower back pressed to the floor to work your abdominals. If that’s too hard, keep your knees bent at about 90 degrees until your strength and flexibility improve.

14 Deceptive ‘Health’ Foods

The authors of the bestselling new book Eat This, Not That! penned the Supermarket Survival Guide to uncover the most misunderstood “health” foods in America. To help you slim down this year, the Eat This, Not That! guys have identified the 14 most punishing health ruses–and the delicious alternatives to keep you satisfied, giving you all the purported nutritional benefits that many of our most beloved foods sadly do not contain.

Read all 14 here to discover a new, smarter game plan!

Turkey burger

  • 850 calories
  • 50 g fat

Eat this instead: 7 oz sirloin steak

  • 350 calories
  • 20 g fat

People hear turkey and automatically think lean and healthy, but depending on the type of ground turkey and toppings used, one of these poultry patties can be every bit as fatty and caloric as a beef burger. Sirloin, on the other hand, is one of the leanest cuts of meat available, which makes for an incredibly satisfying, protein-enriched meal that will keep you feeling fuller, longer. Who wouldn’t want to make this swap?

Bagel with cream cheese

  • 700 calories
  • 40 g fat
  • 13g saturated

Eat this instead: Cheese omelet

  • 425 calories
  • 18 g fat
  • 6 g saturated

Bagels are bogus. The bread is bad enough, containing 300 calories and 60 grams of carbohydrates, but tack on the liberal cream cheese schmear (by our survey of popular breakfast chains, up to 4 ounces for a single bagel!) and your “harmless” breakfast snack just got worse than a Whopper. The omelet swap will save you nearly 300 calories, plus provide a surge of metabolism-driving protein. And a recent study from the University of Connecticut found that eggs can help raise HDL (good) cholesterol.

Bran muffin

  • 420 calories
  • 20 g fat

Eat this instead: Ham, egg and cheese on an English muffin

  • 300 calories
  • 12 g fat

Bran muffins are comprised of two things your body doesn’t want in the morning: sugar and refined flour. Both will work to spike your blood sugar, which signals your body to start storing fat and sets you up for a mid-morning crash. And with only trace amounts of fiber, there’s nothing healthy about this misunderstood muffin. The breakfast sandwich, on the other hand, is a surprisingly great way to start your day. Besides having fewer calories, fat, and carbs, it also offers about 20 grams of protein, which we really need in the morning to jumpstart our metabolism.

Pasta salad

  • 300 calories
  • 20 g fat

Eat this instead: Egg salad

  • 200 calories
  • 14 g fat

When the main ingredient for a snack or a side is pasta, you’re asking for trouble. That’s because pasta is made from highly-refined flour, which means quick-burning carbs and a huge spike in blood sugar. Not only does it save you a hundred calories, but the egg salad replaces those troublesome carbs with healthy protein, which helps fill your belly faster and keeps your metabolic fires effectively stoked.

Uncover a lean body with Crazy 8 weight intervals

Prepare to save time at the gym. This “crazy 8″ sequence of three exercises, created by Dorian Brito, C.S.C.S., is a fast, intense way to build muscle and burn fat. Perform eight repetitions of each exercise and move on to the next. One set is complete after you perform all three movements. Try to complete four sets in 15 minutes.

workout11. Double-Lunge Deadlift Combo

Start with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding dumbbells at your sides. Lunge forward with your right leg, then immediately lunge backward.

Now stand straight with your right leg bent off the ground, and perform a one-legged deadlift: Bend forward at the waist with shoulders back, chest out, and dumbbells at your sides.

Stand up, switch legs, and repeat the sequence.

That’s one rep. Perform eight reps total.

workout22. Dumbbell Pushup, Dumbbell Row

Still holding the dumbbells, move to a pushup position with your hands shoulder-width apart.

Perform a pushup, then hold yourself up with your left arm and lift the dumbbell with your right.

Lower your arm and row on the opposite side to finish the rep.

Do seven more reps.

workout33. Towel Pike

Move into a pushup position with your hands shoulder-width apart on the dumbbells and your feet on a towel.

From this position, use your abs to slide your feet forward so that your body is an inverted V.

Then move back to the starting position.

Complete eight repetitions.

The Demise of Dating

The paradigm has shifted. Dating is dated. Hooking up is here to stay.

(For those over 30 years old: hooking up is a casual sexual encounter with no expectation of future emotional commitment. Think of it as a one-night stand with someone you know.)

According to a report released this spring by Child Trends, a Washington research group, there are now more high school seniors saying that they never date than seniors who say that they date frequently. Apparently, it’s all about the hookup.

When I first heard about hooking up years ago, I figured that it was a fad that would soon fizzle. I was wrong. It seems to be becoming the norm.

I should point out that just because more young people seem to be hooking up instead of dating doesn’t mean that they’re having more sex (they’ve been having less, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) or having sex with strangers (they’re more likely to hook up with a friend, according to a 2006 paper in the Journal of Adolescent Research).

To help me understand this phenomenon, I called Kathleen Bogle, a professor at La Salle University in Philadelphia who has studied hooking up among college students and is the author of the 2008 book, “Hooking Up: Sex, Dating and Relationships on Campus.”

It turns out that everything is the opposite of what I remember. Under the old model, you dated a few times and, if you really liked the person, you might consider having sex. Under the new model, you hook up a few times and, if you really like the person, you might consider going on a date.

I asked her to explain the pros and cons of this strange culture. According to her, the pros are that hooking up emphasizes group friendships over the one-pair model of dating, and, therefore, removes the negative stigma from those who can’t get a date. As she put it, “It used to be that if you couldn’t get a date, you were a loser.” Now, she said, you just hang out with your friends and hope that something happens.

The cons center on the issues of gender inequity. Girls get tired of hooking up because they want it to lead to a relationship (the guys don’t), and, as they get older, they start to realize that it’s not a good way to find a spouse. Also, there’s an increased likelihood of sexual assaults because hooking up is often fueled by alcohol.

That’s not good. So why is there an increase in hooking up? According to Professor Bogle, it’s: the collapse of advanced planning, lopsided gender ratios on campus, delaying marriage, relaxing values and sheer momentum.

It used to be that “you were trained your whole life to date,” said Ms. Bogle. “Now we’ve lost that ability — the ability to just ask someone out and get to know them.”

Now that’s sad.

Four ways Fending off Fatigue

1. Visualize and Realize

The first two ways to fight through fatigue are for people whose minds often dwell slightly on the darker side. The second of two ways are for those who prefer to look on the brighter side of life.

Spite, albeit is not a good attribute to have in human relations, can be a great motivator if it is internalized. When Abraham Lincoln was angry, he would take his attitude and spite and put it on pen and paper, never to be read by anyone but him. Classic fiction books tell us how a will for revenge can pull people through the direct circumstances.

You are exercising, but you just want to quit. You have that high school reunion in just a few months. Do you want to look better than the former cheerleader or jock? You could be going on vacation with friends and want to look the best in a bathing suit. Find that one person you want to look better than, and visualize the satisfaction you will feel when the time comes. Michael Jordan used to visualize that he was the best basketball player. Look how far he came along. The hard work will pay dividends.

2. Use Hormones to Your Advantage

We have all heard the stories about mothers pulling cars off their babies. These amazing stories may be urban legends, maybe not. The fact is that anything is possible. The medical community does not give nearly lifeless people adrenaline shots for nothing.

Think of something that excites or elicits fear. The adrenal fight or flight response will take away the fatigue. Former athletes who have to compete in something may be afraid of embarrassment. Work hard now so you do not get embarrassed later. Even think about a big, hairy spider. Just get the fear going.

If competition or fear is not your thing, think of something exciting. Relive it in your head. Use your brain as a Blue Ray player. Relive how you felt on that roller coaster or bungee cord. Maybe even relive an exciting sexual experience. Replay an exciting event in your life and the fatigue will not only be far from your mind, but it will disappear.

3. Think Light

You are tired when you say you are tired. You are defeated when you think you are defeated. When fatigue sets in, do not think of anything depressing or defeating. Discouraging thoughts actually cause fatigue (think of hypochondriacs).

Focus your mind on achieving a goal. Imagine hearing the doctor tell you that you are in perfect health. Think of something nice someone said to you or did for you.

Also, stay in brightly lit areas as much as possible. Bright light causes the body to release hormones that rouse you in the morning. Darkness causes the release of Melatonin, which puts you to sleep.

4. Distract Your Mind

As the miles begin to add up, you must distract your mind from the fatigue. Count your steps. Think of funny jokes. Quote Chuck Norris facts. Say the alphabet forward and then backward. Do not sing aloud, as it shortens your breath, but sing inside your head. Smile. Have fun! Try these and see if one helps.

Drive-Thru ABS? Get Ripped Fast

Abs in No Time

Grab a medicine ball for an intensified crunch workout that will flatten your belly before beach season

Get Ripped Fast

In these days of bogus infomercials, fat-burning concoctions, and fitness contraptions that promise incredible abs, there’s something reassuring about a workout with a medicine ball. The heft of a vintage medicine ball makes us want to put on gray sweats and start heaving it around with the fellas, grunting contentedly. On the other hand, you can take the vintage thing too far. Leather is out; vinyl is in. Medicine balls now have easier-to-grab surfaces, and they come in many sizes and weights. (They still need a new name, though. Medicine?)

What Are You Waiting For?

Here’s a leave-me-alone, in-a-hurry, 21st-century set of exercises that uses the weight of a medicine ball to blast your belly from top to bottom, and your obliques on the sides–those all-important muscles you use when doing twisting, turning moves in sports. The workout was designed by Jacqueline Wagner, C.S.C.S., a strength coach in New York City. The added weight of the medicine ball will give you a more intense workout than you’ll get with conventional crunches.

Use a ball that’s light enough so you can do one set of each exercise without straining or arching your back. A good weight for ab workouts is a 4 kilogram medicine ball (just shy of 9 pounds). Start with one circuit and build up to three sets of the circuit. Use a slow, controlled movement for the double crunch and reverse crunch.

Double Crunch

Starting position:
Lie on your back, with your hips and knees bent as shown and your feet off the floor. Rest your hands lightly on your chest. Position the ball between your knees.

The move:
Exhale as you lift your shoulders off the floor and bring your knees toward your chest. Grab the ball with your hands and bring it to your chest as you inhale and

The finish:
Return your shoulders and legs to the starting position. Transfer the ball back to your legs on the next repetition, and keep alternating ball positions for the entire set.

Seated Twist

Starting position:
Sit on the floor, your back straight but leaning slightly toward the floor, as if in the “up” position of a situp. Your knees should be bent 90 degrees, your heels about 15 inches apart and resting on the floor.

The move:
Hold the ball close to your chest, 2 rotate your torso to the left, and place the ball on the floor behind you. Rotate around to the right, pick up the ball, rotate left, and place it behind you.

The finish:
Repeat eight to 12 times, then do eight to 12 more starting with a rotation to your right; that’s one set.

Hint:
Keep your head in line with your torso throughout the movement. Perform this move as quickly as possible.

Reverse Crunch with Knee Drops

Starting position:
Lie on your back, hands resting on the floor at your sides, hips and knees bent 90 degrees, and feet off the floor. Position the ball between your knees. Keep your lower back on the floor throughout the exercise.

The move:
Contract your abdominals and pull your knees to your chest, then return them to the starting position.

The finish:
Lower your knees to the left and return to the starting position. Drop your knees to your right on the next repetition, and alternate sides for each rep.
