Kogi: The Moving Taco Truck

taco1How would Harold and Kumar ever find White Castle if it was always on the move?

Well the latest craze to hit the west coast, that has Los Angelinos scuttling to find and waiting hours to buy, is a $2 taco stand on wheels called Kogi. The tacos and other portable specialties are an infusion of Korean and Mexican cuisines. They serve up yummy snacks like, Spicy BBQ Chicken, Korean Short Ribs, Spicy Pork, or for the tree huggers, Tofu Tacos. A hit with both the late night party crowd and food critics alike, Kogi is more than just a hip new eatery, it’s also about the chase. See Kogi has two trucks, Verde and Roja, and to find either requires you to follow Twitter or check out their website. Changes are frequents, but that doesn’t seem to bother the masses since lines can average 90 minutes.

Check out the website http://kogibbq.com/  or one of the many YouTube videos of people chasing the Kogi truck.

(And make sure to bring something to keep you busy, you may be waiting for awhile)

Dining on Budget: Frugal Friday’s at Craft

steakwineWith the recession hitting our pockets hard, consumers are opting to stay at home rather than fork over their hard earned pennies for food delicacies.  Tom Coliccho, head judge of the of the Bravo reality TV show Top Chef and co-owner of the Craft restaurant empire, has a solution to our financial woes. Now, Damon Wise, executive chef of Craft, the restaurant will host a weekly Friday dinner that features inexpensive tapas style meals. Craft, known for its haute cuisine, fine ingredients, and celebrity chef, comes with a hefty price tag.  Just a few months ago, Coliccho introduced Tom’s Tuesday Dinner, where the busy chef would prepare an expensive impromptu tasting menu for a select few every other Tuesday, which started around $150 per person. Damon’s Frugal Fridays, which will be held in New York City at the 47 East 19th Street private dining room, offers a wide range of food and beverages that all cost under $10. And don’t think just because it’s frugal that it’s not fancy, the 9 category menu includes such items as fried quail in a chutney and roasted garlic puree, four cheese risotto balls, and octopus, golden pineapple, and duck ham on a stick. Unlike the 6 week in advance reservations needed for most of the Craft restaurants, Frugal Fridays is first come first serve. Beware, there are already rumors of 2 hour waits, but try the “19th Street Headache,” a lethal cocktail offered on the Friday menu that will make the wait much easier and at $4 each, you can afford to have a few.

Diddy & CÎROC Help New Yorkers Get Home Safely This New Year’s Eve

The Diddy Card

The Diddy Card

In an unprecedented effort to promote sophisticated celebration this holiday season, the makers of CÎROC Ultra Premium Vodka – the “Official Vodka of New Year’s Eve” – and Sean “Diddy” Combs will provide thousands of New Yorkers and visitors to the city with a chance for a safe ride home on New Year’s Eve by helping to pick up Yellow Cab fares.

In partnership with the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) and E! Entertainment, Diddy and CÎROC will distribute thousands of debit cards, valued up to $15, in high-traffic New York City locations for use in one of the city’s 13,000-plus taxicabs on New Year’s Eve, so adult revelers can get home safely. CÎROC and E! Entertainment are further supporting the initiative with a message from Combs currently running on taxicab televisions in New York City through January 1, 2009.

“As the ‘Official Vodka of New Year’s Eve,’ we have a responsibility to remind everyone to get home safely on this most celebratory of nights,” said Combs, who entered into a strategic marketing alliance with the spirit brand more than one year ago. “New York is the world’s most iconic New Year’s Eve city, so let’s lead by example and show everyone that a sophisticated holiday celebration doesn’t just end when the ball drops, but when everyone gets home safely.”

“It is always good to see companies like CÎROC highlighting the importance of safety and responsibility,” added Matthew W. Daus, Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman. “Social responsibility and the taxicab industry have always gone hand in hand, so we appreciate CÎROC’s partnership with the industry to ring in 2009 by helping people to celebrate in a thoughtful and intelligent way.”

CÎROC street teams will distribute thousands of debit cards to adult consumers (while supplies last) in Manhattan between 11:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 3:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Each debit card will provide up to $15.00 in cab fare—the approximate cost of a single taxicab fare within New York City.

CÎROC also debuted recently a social responsibility-focused television spot as part of the brand’s widely publicized “Art of Celebration” campaign. The campaign encourages consumers to “Celebrate Life Responsibly” by always making sure to have a designated ride home.

E! is also extending the message nationally with the network’s “Drive Safe” campaign, including on-air spots that feature some of today’s hottest celebrities encouraging responsible choice making and offering people a solution to find a safe ride home. Viewers can text “Drive Safe” to 37373 from their wireless devices to receive taxi contact information in their area. Standard text message rates apply.

The Demise of Dating

The paradigm has shifted. Dating is dated. Hooking up is here to stay.

(For those over 30 years old: hooking up is a casual sexual encounter with no expectation of future emotional commitment. Think of it as a one-night stand with someone you know.)

According to a report released this spring by Child Trends, a Washington research group, there are now more high school seniors saying that they never date than seniors who say that they date frequently. Apparently, it’s all about the hookup.

When I first heard about hooking up years ago, I figured that it was a fad that would soon fizzle. I was wrong. It seems to be becoming the norm.

I should point out that just because more young people seem to be hooking up instead of dating doesn’t mean that they’re having more sex (they’ve been having less, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) or having sex with strangers (they’re more likely to hook up with a friend, according to a 2006 paper in the Journal of Adolescent Research).

To help me understand this phenomenon, I called Kathleen Bogle, a professor at La Salle University in Philadelphia who has studied hooking up among college students and is the author of the 2008 book, “Hooking Up: Sex, Dating and Relationships on Campus.”

It turns out that everything is the opposite of what I remember. Under the old model, you dated a few times and, if you really liked the person, you might consider having sex. Under the new model, you hook up a few times and, if you really like the person, you might consider going on a date.

I asked her to explain the pros and cons of this strange culture. According to her, the pros are that hooking up emphasizes group friendships over the one-pair model of dating, and, therefore, removes the negative stigma from those who can’t get a date. As she put it, “It used to be that if you couldn’t get a date, you were a loser.” Now, she said, you just hang out with your friends and hope that something happens.

The cons center on the issues of gender inequity. Girls get tired of hooking up because they want it to lead to a relationship (the guys don’t), and, as they get older, they start to realize that it’s not a good way to find a spouse. Also, there’s an increased likelihood of sexual assaults because hooking up is often fueled by alcohol.

That’s not good. So why is there an increase in hooking up? According to Professor Bogle, it’s: the collapse of advanced planning, lopsided gender ratios on campus, delaying marriage, relaxing values and sheer momentum.

It used to be that “you were trained your whole life to date,” said Ms. Bogle. “Now we’ve lost that ability — the ability to just ask someone out and get to know them.”

Now that’s sad.

Remy Martin reveals the $2,500 shot….

$2,500.00 can buy you a lot of things, in fact $2,500 is more then half the average monthly income for an American family. Well you can now add one more thing to that list. Remy Martin has released an ultra limited cognac. Dubbed, the limited edition cognac is kept behind a glass case at all times and is only being offered at New York’s Rose Club. Remy Martin released only 358 of the Baccarat designed, hand-blown black crystal bottles to the world in June of 2008. So far there is only one known bottle in New York. The bottle holds 1.75 liters with an estimated 32 pours, which translates to over $80,000.00 USD worth of Cognac per bottle. The Rose Club has yet to uncork their bottle, although manager Anthony Evangelista says he has turned down offers to buy the entire bottle. However purchasing the shot does have it’s perks, according to the staff at the Rose Club “Each drink will be poured by a white gloved-manager and accompanied by a selection of dried fruits and nuts”

Cheers….
