USA Olympic swimming phenom, Michael Phelps, surpasses yet another
hurdle on his quest to becoming the greatest Olympian EVER!! However
that doesn’t mean that his 2nd gold medal of the 2008 Beijung Olympics
came easy. In fact in a shocking thriller, it was Phelps partner
Jason Lezak who stole the show in an amazing epic come from behind
victory in the 400m freestyle relay to capture the gold.
Lezak, the 32 year old American swimmer chased down, the trash talking French
Olympic swimmer Alain Bernard, in his final stroke beating him out by
8 hundredths of a second to claim Olympic Gold and Set a new World
Record time of 3 minutes and 8.24 seconds in the 400m relay. Lezak
said that he thought he lost after diving into the water, feeling that
their was no way to catch the brilliant French anchor. But then in a 5
second moment of truth span thought to himself that, “this is
the Olympics and I’m here for the U.S.A., I don’t care how bad it
hurts.” And with that on his final stroke inserted his name in
the history books as well as keeping Michael Phelps hopes for 8 gold
medals alive and setting a new world record. But there was also
another historic moment that occurred. Cullen Jones, the teams 3rd leg
and New Jersey native, became the first African-American swimmer to
win Olympic gold. Asked about the race, Jones diverted attention away
from himself and gave credit to Lezak saying, “Jason is the most
phenomenal closer I’ve ever seen in my life. He’s been able to get his
hand on the wall from behind, from ahead, it doesn’t matter.”
Even President Bush, who witnessed Phelps’ 2 gold medals, weighed in on
the race. “I was watching Michael Phelps after the anchor
leg touched,” said President Bush, who stopped by the Water Cube
for the second day in a row on his way out of town. “The whole
thing is genuine. That’s the good thing about the
Olympics.” (courtesy of Huff Post)
Whatever the future may have in store for Michael Phelps, one thing is
certain, when it is all said and down this may go down as one of the
greatest victories and come from behind victories of all time, thanks
to Cullen Jones, Jason Lezak, Michael Phelps and Garrett Weber-Gale’s
destroying of the world record where 4 other teams also broke the
record.
